The purpose of this study was to examine relations between hysterectomy patients¢¥ depression and hysterectomy patient s and their husband s sex role attitude. The study subjects were 125 patients who underwent hysterectomy at a university hospital and a general hospital in Kwangju and two general hospitals in Chollanamdo within last one year and their husbands. The data were obtained from medical records and interview from August 1st to September 30th, 1999. Osmond and Martin¢¥ s SexRole Attitude scale and Beck s Depression Inventory were used.

Sex-role attitude was significantly associated with educational level(F=11.14, p=0.00), religion(F=2.70, p=0.03), duration of marriage(r=0.21, p=0.02), monthly income(F=4.53, p=0.00), the number of children(F=2.33, p=0.04), family form(t=2.64, p=0.01), menstruation(t=2.36, p=0.02), and having ovary or not(t=5.8 1, p=0.00).

Depression was significantly associated with age(r=0.18, p=0.05), duration of marriage(r=0.21, p=0.02), having ovary or not(F=3.95, p=0.00), and the impact of operation(t=3.26, p=0.00).

The hypotheses of this study, ¢¥The more traditional sex-role attitude of the hysterectomy patients, the higher degree of depression is(r=0.20, p=0.03)," and ¢¥The more traditional sex-role attitude of the hysterectomy patients¢¥ s husband, the higher degree of depression(r=-0.20, p=0.02):¢¥ were supported.
